Photos of a laser etching by Bathsheba Grossman, on display at the Math and Art exhibit at Axiom in Boston. Axiom is a small gallery space connected to the Green Street T stop.
This cube is a model of the Calabi-Yau manifold, which, if I'm reading that correctly, is a three-dimensional cross-section of a ten-dimensional shape.
The resulting shape looks completely different depending on your angle:

Hiya!
It's not like this blog has been derailed by the release of Harry Potter number seven!
Nope, not at all!

Thing I made: Synapse tree.

SynapseTree

Link of the day:

"And what's more, if we don't get that nourishment, if we are somehow found
lacking in our daily requirement of awe and wonder and
oh-my-god-what-the-hell-is-that, well, we tend to flounder and scrape and
moan, to start reaching for scraps, for hollow, b.s.-laden facsimiles of
true cosmic mystery that tend to smell like organized religion and taste
like bad drugs and feel very much like having sex with a large hunk of
concrete. Which is to say, not the slightest bit juicy or divine at all.

The giant deep-sea squid is, quite simply, the perfect thing..."

Thing of the day: boat of felt.

boatmedium

Place of origin: girl scout camp?

Link of the day: I typed a half-remembered line from a play into YouTube, and out came rhythm and blues.

Thing of the day: scary fish, cardboard, et cetera.
Origin: high school art class. We were given a binful of old filmstrips that we were told no one else could use.

Ogden the ugly fish

Large version here.

Link of the day: Ok, so I'm not surehow I feel about linking to a webcomic named after underpants, but it's just that good. Slice-of-life daily webcomic with a fun female protagonist. So now I have five year's worth of daily comics to catch up on. Awesome.
Discovered via this post on feminist webcomics, via google.

An idea.

072307_hello

Idea: Something I Made, Something I Found. From each day here on out, I will try to post one picture of something I made, and one link to something I found.

Above is a corner of a page I decorated, in a sketchbook that's traveling to 50 people around the world (inspired by the power of the internet). Perhaps what I can offer the internet right now are some colorful doodles?

Something that's fun: Defective Yeti's cliché rotation project. My favorite: "knuckle sandwich" becomes "boot soufflé."
